01 · The basics

What PrEP is, and what it isn’t.

PrEP stands for pre-exposure prophylaxis: HIV medicine taken before any risk, so the virus can’t take hold if it ever gets in. It is one of the most effective prevention tools in medicine.

PrEP is

  • A small daily pill combining two HIV medicines (tenofovir and emtricitabine), taken while you are HIV-negative.
  • For anyone who could come into contact with HIV: any gender, any orientation, living in Pattaya or just visiting.
  • Highly effective: it lowers the risk of HIV from sex by about 99% when taken as prescribed.
  • Flexible: you can stop and restart it safely with your doctor’s advice as your life changes.

PrEP isn’t

  • A vaccine. It protects you only while you keep taking it.
  • Protection from other STIs such as syphilis, gonorrhoea or chlamydia. Condoms help with those, and regular tests catch what they miss.
  • An emergency treatment. After a possible exposure in the last 72 hours you need PEP, a different medicine.
  • Treatment for HIV. That’s why everyone has an HIV test before starting.

Condom broke, or sex without protection in the last 72 hours? You need PEP, not PrEP, and the sooner the better. We can help today.

02 · Two ways to take it

Every day, or just around the weekend.

Same pill, two schedules. The doctor helps you choose based on the kind of sex you have, how often, and your test results.

Option A

Daily PrEP

One pill at about the same time every day. Works for everyone, and it’s the option for vaginal or front-hole sex, for people with hepatitis B and for people taking oestradiol.

Option B

On-demand “2-1-1”

2 pills 2–24 hours before sex, 1 pill 24 hours after the first dose, and 1 pill 48 hours after it. For anal sex only: suits cis men and trans or non-binary people not taking oestradiol, who have sex less often and can plan ahead.

Not sure which suits you? Try both in the planner and bring your questions to the doctor.

03 · Getting started

Your first visit, itemised.

No referral and no Thai ID card needed. Most of the visit is waiting for one quick test result, and you leave with a plan and your pills.

06 · Safety

Side effects, honestly.

PrEP has been used safely by millions of people worldwide. Most people feel nothing at all; here is what the others notice.

A pill case, a glass of water and a phone showing a medication reminder app

Start-up symptoms

Some people get mild nausea, a headache or an upset stomach in the first few weeks. It usually settles on its own within a month.

Kidneys

In a small number of people PrEP affects kidney function, so it’s checked before you start and at your follow-ups. Changes usually reverse if PrEP is stopped.

Hormones & other medicines

PrEP can be taken with gender-affirming hormones and contraception. Tell the doctor about any other medicines or supplements.

Alcohol & party drugs

They don’t stop PrEP working. The real risk is forgetting a dose, so set a daily reminder (the planner can add one to your calendar).

All PrEP questions →

How quickly does PrEP start working?

Daily PrEP reaches full protection after about 7 days of pills for anal sex, and about 21 days for vaginal or front-hole sex. With on-demand 2-1-1, the double first dose must be taken 2–24 hours before sex.

Until you’re fully protected, use condoms or other protection.

Can I get PrEP in Pattaya as a tourist?

Yes. Visitors start PrEP after the same simple tests as anyone else. Ask the doctor how many pills to take home, and bring your results and plan to your own doctor so you can continue without a gap.

What happens if I miss a pill?

Take it as soon as you remember, then carry on as normal. Never take two doses on the same day to catch up. An occasional missed pill doesn’t mean PrEP stops working, but if it happens often, talk to us about reminders or switching schedules.

Does PrEP protect against other STIs?

No. PrEP only prevents HIV. Condoms lower the risk of syphilis, gonorrhoea and chlamydia, and the 3-monthly check-up is a good moment for an STI screen, because many STIs have no symptoms.

Can I drink alcohol while taking PrEP?

Yes. Alcohol doesn’t interact with PrEP or make it less effective. Just make sure a big night out doesn’t make you forget your next pill.

How do I stop PrEP safely?

Talk to the doctor first. How long you keep taking pills after the last time you had sex depends on the kind of sex and your schedule. If you have hepatitis B, stopping suddenly can cause a flare, so it needs a plan.

Is PrEP the same as PEP?

No. PrEP is taken before any exposure, as ongoing protection. PEP is a 28-day emergency course started within 72 hours after a possible exposure. If you think you were exposed recently, contact us now and ask for PEP.

What tests do I need before starting?

An HIV test (PrEP is only for people who are HIV-negative), a kidney function test and a hepatitis B test. An STI screen is recommended but optional. The doctor goes through all the results with you.
