Truvada in Thailand: Teno-EM, Generics and Other PrEP Brands

Truvada, Teno-EM and other generics share the same two medicines. Here is how PrEP brands in Thailand compare and where Descovy fits.

Blister packs of blue capsules

Truvada is available in Thailand, but most people here take PrEP as a generic version with the same two medicines, such as the Thai-made Teno-EM. Both contain tenofovir disoproxil and emtricitabine (often written TDF/FTC), and both work the same way to prevent HIV. The brand name changes the box and the price, not the protection.

This guide explains what PrEP pills actually are, how the main brands in Thailand compare, and what to check before you start.

What are PrEP pills?

Oral PrEP is a pill containing two HIV medicines. Taken correctly, they stop HIV from taking hold if it enters the body.

The standard combination is:

  • Tenofovir disoproxil (TDF)
  • Emtricitabine (FTC)

The World Health Organization recommends TDF-based oral PrEP for people at substantial risk of HIV, as part of wider prevention. This is the combination inside Truvada and inside the generics sold in Thailand.

So when someone asks for "the PrEP in Thailand name", the honest answer is that the medicine has one name and several brands. For the basics, see what PrEP is and how it works.

PrEP brands in Thailand compared

You will come across a few names in pharmacies, clinics and online. Here is how they line up.

Truvada vs Teno-EM vs Descovy

TruvadaTDF/FTCOriginal brandYes
Teno-EMTDF/FTCThai-made genericYes
Other genericsTDF/FTCImported genericsYes
DescovyTAF/FTCNewer brandNo

Truvada was the first PrEP pill. Teno-EM is made in Thailand by the Government Pharmaceutical Organization and has long been part of Thai national HIV prevention programmes. Other TDF/FTC generics, often made in India, are also sold in the region.

Where Descovy fits

Descovy uses tenofovir alafenamide (TAF) instead of tenofovir disoproxil. It is a newer form designed to reach cells at lower levels in the blood.

Descovy is not approved for people at risk of HIV through receptive vaginal or front-hole sex, because it has not been studied enough in that group. It is also not the pill used in 2-1-1 research. A doctor will assess your situation if you are asking about it.

Are generic PrEP pills as good as Truvada?

Yes, when they are genuine and approved. A generic must contain the same active medicines in the same amounts and reach the same levels in the body as the original.

Generics sold in Thailand must be registered with the Thai Food and Drug Administration, which checks that they match the original medicine. Thailand's national HIV programmes rely on TDF/FTC generics for both prevention and treatment.

What matters for protection is:

  1. Taking PrEP the way it was prescribed
  2. Giving it time to build up before you rely on it
  3. Coming back for follow-up tests every three months

Our guide on how long PrEP takes to work explains the 7-day rule for anal sex and the 21-day rule for vaginal or front-hole sex. Those timings apply to TDF/FTC whatever the brand.

Which PrEP works for 2-1-1?

On-demand PrEP, also called 2-1-1, was studied with TDF/FTC. That means Truvada, Teno-EM and other TDF/FTC generics can be used this way.

There are important limits, whatever brand you use:

  • It is for anal sex only
  • It is not suitable for people with hepatitis B
  • It is not suitable for people taking oestradiol

The full timing is explained in our guide to on-demand PrEP and the 2-1-1 schedule.

Buying PrEP safely: genuine packs, side effects and cost

Fake and poorly stored medicines exist, especially online. A few quick checks protect you.

How to recognise a genuine PrEP pack

CheckWhat to look for
SourceLicensed clinic, hospital or pharmacy
PackagingSealed bottle or blister, printed clearly
IngredientsTenofovir disoproxil + emtricitabine
Batch and expiryPrinted and in date
RegistrationThai FDA registration number on the box

Avoid buying PrEP from social media sellers or unmarked packs. Even a genuine pill does not replace the start-up tests, which make sure PrEP is safe for your kidneys and right for your hepatitis B status. Our page on the tests before starting PrEP explains each one.

Do side effects differ between brands?

Because Truvada and its generics contain the same medicines, people tend to notice the same things. Most feel nothing at all. A few have mild nausea, a looser stomach or headaches in the first weeks, which usually settle without stopping.

The longer-term points to watch are the kidneys and bone density. That is why kidney function is checked before you start and again at follow-up visits, whichever brand you take.

Small differences you might notice:

  • Pill size and colour. Generics can look different from Truvada, even with the same contents.
  • Packaging. Some come in bottles, others in blister strips, which can be easier to carry.
  • Inactive ingredients. Fillers and coatings vary, which rarely matters but is worth mentioning if you have allergies.

If something does not feel right after switching brands, talk to a doctor rather than stopping on your own.

What affects the cost of PrEP in Thailand

Brand is one of the biggest factors in what you pay. The original brand usually costs much more than a generic with the same medicines.

Other factors include:

  • How many months of pills you take at once
  • Whether start-up and follow-up tests are included
  • Whether you choose daily PrEP or on-demand use

See our PrEP prices page for what is included and how costs are worked out.

Frequently asked questions

Is Teno-EM the same as Truvada?

Teno-EM contains the same two medicines as Truvada, tenofovir disoproxil and emtricitabine. It is a registered Thai generic and has long been used in Thai national HIV programmes.

Can I buy Truvada in Thailand?

Truvada may be available in some hospitals and pharmacies, but generic TDF/FTC is far more common. A doctor-led start with HIV, kidney and hepatitis B tests is still recommended.

Is Descovy available for women?

Descovy is not approved for people at risk of HIV through receptive vaginal or front-hole sex. TDF/FTC, such as Truvada or a generic, is used instead.

Can I switch between brands of PrEP?

Yes, switching between Truvada and a TDF/FTC generic is generally fine because the medicines are the same. Keep taking it without a gap, and tell your doctor about any change.

Does tenofovir alone work as PrEP?

The standard oral PrEP pill combines tenofovir disoproxil with emtricitabine. Do not use a single-ingredient tenofovir product as PrEP unless a doctor has advised it.
